Amelia Leopold founded the Washington Book Exchange in 2017 in her sophomore year at Interlake High School. Her goal was — and remains — to help level the academic playing field. Amelia noticed that the more-affluent students accumulated several test-prep books each year, but that most of these materials are thrown away in like-new condition every June. She believes these resources can be redistributed to help students in need to reach their potential on standardized tests. In the six years since its founding, the Washington Book Exchange has touched the lives of hundreds of students by redistributing books anonymously (to preserve the dignity of those who receive them), and helping many students to “test their very best.” |
Annie Zhao is currently a senior at Interlake High School in Bellevue, Washington. Annie noticed that competitive academic environments disproportionately impact students who cannot afford prep books, tutoring, or other forms of test preparation that are costly, and thus cares deeply about expanding educational opportunities to lower-income students. She believes that equitable access to test prep books and other study materials can significantly bridge the educational disparities she has noticed.
Sayana Isaac is a senior at Interlake High School. Throughout high school, Sayana has grown increasingly concerned with inequitable access to health care and other forms of social inequity prevalent within the healthcare industry. She has worked with peers to find ways to reduce such disparities and is very excited to continue combating inequity within the field of education. Sayana hopes that the efforts of the Washington Book Exchange will result in the academic success of many students from lower-income families in her community.
